.MTS file issue

Hello all
I am currently editing a project and I have been receiving the files via upload/download, they are in an .MTS format. The first batch of videos have worked fine with no issues, they play in the VLC player with no problems and I have no issues importing them into my editing program (AVID). They range from about 20 - 50 minutes in length.
However I am having issues with some new footage I have been sent. Whenever I open it in VLC it takes much longer to open (although it is about 2 hours in length, which may explain it), it will only run for about a minute before freezing then crashing, the timecode also remains at 00:00 the whole time. Skipping ahead results in it crashing as well. When I try to import it into AVID it does not work. I have tried to convert it to a different file format but it will only go as far as when it freezes, I have also tried resetting the preferences but that does not do anything. The file works fine for the person sending it to me though, does anyone have any idea on what might be happening? As far as I can tell is the exact same file format as the ones that have worked.
My Mac is on version OS X 10.9.4 and the VLC is version 2.1.5
Thanks
