Firstly, what a marvellous player! VLC has saved me in many situations. One nag... would like to set vlc as the main player rather than haveing to chose it over crappy ol' quicktime. Despite a long search...
Any tips out there? Mac OSX 10.4 btw.

Go to
System Preferences->CDs and DVDs
and disable DVD Player as the default application for DVDs. You can even select VLC as the default application. If that doesn't work, go to DVD Player->Preferences and disable DVD Player again as the default application for DVDs. However, I think that System Preferences should do.
Beware that DVD Player will attempt to force you to select a region code for your Mac, unlike VLC.
