you have to offer more info, or else people will only be able to guess at a solution.

@Eric: Do you have Windows Media Player 9 or 10 installed? VLC needs that to play WMV3 correctly.
If yes, provide some debug messages here (see View -> Messages).

wmv3 codec in avi files doesn't work

If I understand the previous post correctly, I should be able to play files with the fourcc WMV3 codec. I have Windows Media Player 9 installed on Mac OS X 10.4.

There seems to be some confusion, because WMP seems only to be able to decode WMV3 files in the .wmv wrapper, but the files I need to play are .avi's.

Any help? Can I rewap these puppies as .wmv with some util (either Mac or Windows)? Will that help?

You can only play WMV3-content with VLC on Windows. Installing WMP for Mac does not help, since VLC cannot access its codecs (and that wouldn't be legal either).

Sorry, I don't no any application that isn't from M$ to create WMV-containers. You should still be able to play these files with VLC on Windows though.

Thanks for the response. My much newer Windows laptop is a better video player anyway, I just hate lugging the dang thing around.

Thanks for all your help. Anyway, I think I will stick to mpeg or avi files which can make my life easier.

"You can only play WMV3-content with VLC on Windows"

The features list clearly shows this in the table.
