VLC with USB-based AC3 pass through

I am using VLC and Mac Min with a USB device from TransiteAudio.
http://www.zzounds.com/item--MDOTRANSIT that provides SPDIF optical ditial output. This device works perfectyl fine with Mac Mini's DVD player and passes through the digital out using SPDIF but VLC fails to recognize it and does not work. Can anyone hlep please.

You should read the README.MacOSX.rtf file of the 0.8.2 release which has information about just these exact issues.

As I understand it the Mac OS X version of VLC doesn't support SPDIF in any way. To use any SPDIF output VLC has to use CoreAudio, and they haven't figured out how yet. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Actaully by setting VLC to Core Auio, SPDIF works fine and I am now using my mAudio device with optincal output (SPDIF active) working fine. Please see previous comment/advice.

With coreaudio VLC & AC3 doesn't work and I have done everything advised in the READ ME...
