Lag when playing from network drive

Hello good people of the VLC community!
Since I got a NAS a few months ago VLC has been acting up. Almost for every minute there is a 5-20 second freeze. Everything is wired in the network, and read speeds on the NAS are at about 60mbps, so speed isn't the problem. VLC for iOS plays videos (if I don't beam them to the Apple TV) flawlessly on wifi. Other media players on OSX also work without any issues. I kept updating to each new version, but with no luck.
The NAS is a zyxel 325v2, and I'm on a rMBP 13".
This is when I try to play straight from the network share. I also have a twonky running on the NAS, but it only shows up like this, and of course nothing plays when I try.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a fix, at least for the lag problem?
