No codecs???

Postby d1arm1d » 22 Aug 2005 15:46

Hi,

I downloaded VLC as per the instructions -to the letter I think- when I tried to open files, nothing, message said VLC unable to decode, no codecs listed in preferences.

Have uninstalled it for now (computer then hung, first time ever eek). I would like to persevere after all the good things I have read on the web about VLC. What went wrong?

iMac G5 with Quicktime 7 non-pro

Cheers, Diarmid.

You have no codec at all in the prefs ? (something like ffmpeg ?)

if so, you should try reinstalling/redownloading ... something must have gone wrong

I have the same problem. Where you able to solve this? I downloaded VLC a couple of times already but still no codecs.

Ha! I have re-downloaded it, it does now seem to work with a fair number of files - including ones that quicktime spits out tho it hangs on some quicktime plays- but the input/codecs page is still blank in preferences (?) And the advanced one too. Think I must be missing something here :^(

Cheers, Diarmid

I downloaded the version for 10.1 macs and that worked for me. the codecs were there and everything. I don't know what's up with the version for 10.3 but that didn't work for me

yeah. i think you could. are you running on Tiger though? When I used the right version of VLC for my OS, the picture was pink and double. Yes double like split screen. Now that I use the older version, it's a-ok

Thanks for visiting my site.

Nope, Panther, and it does seem to be working. What I'm not clear about is whether I should see anything listed in "Preferences" at "Input/Codecs", "Stream Output", "Advanced" and "Interface". At the moment, these just bring up a blank. Anyone out there know about this?

In fact, stranger & stranger, I note from the documentation pages that the OS X preferences list should have the following items that are not present in my (VLC 0.8.2)preferences list: Subpictures, CPU, Misc., Hotkeys, Modules.

Anyone know wot up :?:

Postby Guest » 26 Aug 2005 15:15

Sorry for jumping in here...I'm a newby to this forum, but...

I have a similar problem....but have a few codecs running. Divx, 3ivx, ffusion & xvid. i can run most vids but i have a couple of QT .avi's that simply wont budge!!!???

the message that comes up is this:

"main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `IV50'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format."

Any ideas?

You enabled the advanced-flag at the bottom of the page, didn't you? "Input/Codecs" is always empty. You need to dive into a lower category using the triangle on the left to see any options.

I would like to mention that this outdated version (it's not a special version for 10.1, but just an old one of the time we supported that version of OSX) is unable to run on 10.4 correctly, is much more buggy than 0.8.2 and doesn't feature a bunch of stuff added later on (remember: it was released on May 21st 2004).

This is the old list of categories. Where did you find that list? I will update it then.

I've tried this search thingy and after a good long wander around reading non relevent posts, the best suggestion I can come up with is to delete the vlc directory & the plist in ~/Library/Preferences. (Or is the plist IN the directory - I'm at work now on a horrid pc, no access to my vlc-ed mac to have a look!)

Might try the Dementia route to an older release, but it would be nice to know if my installation of 0.8.2 is behaving normally or not, vis a vis the preference pane appearing different to that in the documentation. I figure their MUST be some codecs in there somewhere or it would'nt play any files! Ho hum...

The search thing was for the Guest poster ... not for you :)

Try having a look at FK's suggestions.

Oh hi, Big Cone person,

Sorry my post crossed with yours. I got that off the documentation page. I THINK it was the online english guide to VLC player. Sounds like my installation may be behaving ok then
