Audio issues with VLC 2.1.0/Mac OS 10.8.5

Greetings!
VLC is my go-to media player for video, but in the past week I've experienced a couple of new audio-related problems. I have 2.1.0 installed, but I'm not sure if these problems arose immediately upon updating to the current version. If I pause a video during playback, leave it paused for a while (some minutes or longer), and resume playback, audio resumption is delayed several sections, perhaps causing me to miss some dialog if I'm watching a movie, etc. Not a deal-breaker, but annoying. Additionally, if I launch a new video by dropping it on the VLC icon in the dock, usually audio starts immediately, but occasionally it begins to play muted, even though it wasn't left in a muted state. All I have to do is to change the volume state and audio immediately resumes, so again, this is nothing more than inconvenient.
Any informed ideas? TIA, George
