Can VLC do smooth HD?

Postby Guest » 13 Aug 2005 17:49

I've been trying to find some way to play HD mgeg 2 TS pulled from an HD cablebox via firewire. My Mac Mini is attached to the same HD TV/Monitor as the cable box, and I was hoping to be able to play the archived streams back from the Mac, with the same resoultion and smooth motion as viewing the original from the cablebox.

So far the big obstacle is "smooth". Is it possible to get smooth playback at 1920x1080 resolution (30fps).?

I heard the mini is underpowered for that.

That's true. It's fine for web-browsing, watching DVDs or even H.264 content in DVD-size, etc., but HDTV is definitely too much for it (even if you use MPEG2 and not H.264).

(Tried that on my girlfriend's one.)

I am having the same issue. I am new to this whole HD capture thing as I completed my first one last night. When I play the file in VLC its viewable, I would just like to make it smoother.

I currently have a 1.5G4 Powerbook with 512MB RAM (running Tiger). Is that just not enough powere to make it smooth. Is there anything I can do to make it better?

Any help is appreciated!!!

certain codecs are much less CPU intensive than others. H.264 is very hard work, MPEG2 is less so but still quite high. Much lower overheads can be achieved with divx and mpeg1 in fact! Check out the "least likely" sample available here: http://www.digigami.com/megapeg/samples.php

I also wanted to get the HD video onto a DVD. What is the best way to do this if I do not have a dual layer DVD burner? How can I make these discs playable on a standard DVD player?

If I complress the video with Diva will I then be able to import that into iMove or Final Cut Pro and make an iDVD out of it? What would I have to compress the file type into? Once again, any help is appreciated.
