Connect to NAS via SMB

Hi,

due to the fact that it is still not possible to trigger the iOs VLC Player app from within the Synology DS File app. What about the idea to connect to various NAS system via SMB?

Kind regards,
Michael

We are working on this. So far, we didn't find a legal and easy way to do it, as the license of libsmb / SAMBA isn't compatible with the App Store's terms of service. We might use BSD's SMB implementation, but work didn't start yet.

How's the progress with SMB support in VLC for iOS?
It would be really useful to have access to videos stored in Windows Shared Folders! :D

We successfully implemented the entire SMB protocol in version 1 and 2 as an external library now and it works well. Now, VLC needs to be adapted and it will be available. So, this feature will be published later this summer.

Not to necro, but is this code available somewhere to look at? I was looking into creating some open source iOS apps that would need to be able to access SMB shares and had seen some of the other libraries out there that didn't seem that useful and it would be awesome to be able to use the library you mentioned.

TimeCapsule requires the SMB protocol, which is not part of current releases of VLC for iOS.

SMB support seems to still be absent in the latest version of VLC for iOS... :(
Did that implementation ran into any additional problems? :?

We pushed it back a bit but it's still coming. Actually, it is not the implementation of SMB to blame here but further adaptions which needs to be done like safely handling stored passwords, etc.
