How to set a larger buffer for slow network connections?

Hello there,

usually I'm playing HD movies on VLC, but they physically reside on other computers. Since even my LAN doesn't seem to be able to keep up with the speed requirements and in fact, is quite irregular, I would like to know if there's a way for VLC to have more aggressive buffering so as to avoid really annoying hiccups, especially during high-bitrate scenes.
