VLC for iOS: https with Self-Signed Certificate

So I tried to download a file through https using VLC, and got a Download failed popup saying that the certificate for the server is invalid. There is no option to accept the certificate or to ignore the error, the only button is Cancel. I really don't want to have to buy a certificate from another provider, and given it's a <name>.homeip.net address, they probably would not sign it anyways. What's the solution to this? Can I upload my certificate to VLC manually through iTunes?

Also I want to make sure that the next step which is password authentication with the webserver will also work with VLC, although I have reason to believe it will if I use the https://username:password@hostname/ format.

I use StartSSL for my certificates, you can get free SSL certs from them and they are now included in a lot of recent certificate authority packs.

I went ahead and tried, and StartSSL won't take a homeip.net subdomain, they have to be second level domains only, so that's no good either.

Sorry Zanthra, I forgot about that as I'm operating a second-level myself.

Sorry, there is no solution so far for this issue.
