VLC playback problems with mp4 files on optical discs

Postby holokin » 01 Aug 2013 20:41

I installed VLC 2.0.7 so that I could watch mp4 and xvid movie files that I have burned and stored on DVD discs. I have been experiencing severe problems using VLC to play these files when they are on the discs. VLC takes an excruciatingly long time to load these files and then when it does finally play them back, I get severe stuttering in both video and audio, and frequent episodic degradation of the image (blockiness and pixelation).

When I copy the mp4 and xvid movie files to the hard drive, VLC can play back these files from the hard drive fine with no problems at all. It does not have the loading problems or stuttering, and no image degradation when it is reading the files from the hard drive. I'm not sure why VLC has problems playing the files from the DVD disc, but plays them fine when these same files are on the hard drive.

I tried QuickTime Player, and it has no problems at all playing these same files on the DVD disc. I also installed MPlayer OSX Extended, and this program also plays the files perfectly from the DVD disc.

So I don't know why VLC is the only program that has severe problems with files that reside on a DVD disc. I also tried other DVD discs that I have burned mp4 files on, and VLC has problems with all of them, but QuickTime Player and MPlayer OSX Extended play back these files perfectly.

I really like VLC and would like to use it. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Hi, I am a newbie, so this is a newbie answer. Somewhere I read that VLC does not support newer DVD drives. The older DVD drives work fine. Perhaps someone else on this board can validate this?
