greek (windows -1253) subtitles don´t work ipad/iphone

hi!
I started to watch a movie on my iphone that had greek subtitles ( a separate .srt file). The subtitles only appeared as squares on the screen (the settings were set to greek (windows-1253)). I thought I had the wrong settings so I changed them to greek (ISO 8859-6) instead but that didn´t work either...
...so i tried to watch it on my ipad, just in case there was something wrong with the vlc version installed on my iphone, but the same issue appeared again and again. In other words, the text only appeared as squares.
Then i thought that it might be a corrupted .srt file, so I sat down in front of my mac and played the movie on VLC on my computer. I set the settings to greek(windows-1253) and everything was working fine. The text was readable.
In other words, the subtitle settings, greek (windows-1253) doen´t work on my iphone or ipad. the text is only appearing as squares.
is there a bug or am I missing something?
(I have taken photographs (1x the movie with the text on my iphone, 1x the movie with the subtitles on my mac) but don´t know how to upload them from my computer and into this message)
regards
Chris
ps. maybe this is a known issue but VLC crashes from time to time on my iphone, when a movie has ended or when I try to rewind or fast forward.
