What don't you understand by this message: "VLC probably does not support this sound or video format." ?
This format is supported under Windows only and only if you have the latest Windows Media Player installed.
Blame M$ for that and search the forum for WMV3 to get more information on this topic.

First, I appreciate that the VideoLAN team provides this app to users for free.
However, why the unfriendly response: "What don't you understand by this message"?
For what it's worth, I've been receiving the exact same error while attempting to play wmv3 files. According to the VideoLAN site, wmv3 is supported and is NOT experimental (for Macs).
Finally, after poring over the posts here for a coupla days and trying this and that..., I found Flip4Mac's Quicktime WMV component. I downloaded it and, guess what? It plays ALL of the wmv3 files that VLC could not.
Now, I can't stand MS as much as the next Mac user, but blaming them is sometimes a copout.
Thanks, Fkuehne, for nothin'.
Good luck, jvp1010.

wmv3 isn't supported for mac.
it will be supported once the SMPTE make the VC1 specs public. (it'll take another 6 months to 1 year before they do so i guess)

I have these files that I've downloaded from the web. After opening one of them and checking the properties, it says:
Stream 0: Codec wma2, Type Audio, Channels 2, etc.
Stream 1: Codec wmv3, Type Video, Resolution 320 X 240
Doesn't this mean that it's wmv3 ? If so, then FlipForMac's plugin for Quicktime (OS X) does play wmv3.
Please let me know if I'm misunderstanding something.
