VLC for iOS needs better file management

Postby dburr » 23 Jul 2013 06:39

Just downloaded VLC 2 for iOS. Lovely app. I've been looking for an app that handles the various video formats and advanced subtitles that anime fansub groups typically use, and VLC does this marvelously.

Unfortunately VLC's file management needs a lot of work. Having all your videos in one gigantic list is inconvenient. Ideally the ability to create subfolders and move videos into them would be best I think. Or a way of creating playlists. Or even a search function that will filter the display to only show videos whose names match your search.

I am hopeful that these shortcomings will be addressed in a future version. Other than that, fantastic work, and thank you for bringing VLC back to iOS.

PS: I wrote a brief article about VLC for my blog/podcast, and also made it a "Cool Find": http://otakunopodcast.com/2013/07/22/co ... r-for-ios/

Well, first, I am very happy to see:
I was able to play a 1080p normal H.264 video on my iPhone 5 with perfect quality, as well as a 720p Hi10p video.
Because noone usually cares about those things, and in the past, the anime community hated us.

Yes, this is true. We hope to have that around at some point. Patches welcome ;D

Well this is one anime community member who very much appreciates everything that you folks are doing. Both VLC for desktop and now VLC for iOS are fantastic apps that I use and recommend daily.

Looking forward to the improved file management. Maybe one day when I level-up my iOS development skills I will be able to contribute something. :-)

I'm currently looking into file management, since a whole lot of users are requesting it (to play audio-only media actually).
