btw... os X.4 tiger has had an ongoing bug with it's internationalization/laungage/fonts... I had to employ a little trick with quicktime to fix a problem caused by it.
It may help you...trash your itunes pref(note this will not disturb your music)... then you change the language of your system (say to spanish).. restart itunes.. quit itunes after saving prefs... reboot.. change it back to the original language.. reboot again.
it "may" fix the problem. (at least it worked for qt)

Also have you added/modified any fonts lately? Sounds an awful lot like a font conflict to me. You can check for conflicts by opening Font Book ... if any of the fonts in the lists have little black dots beside them they are having conflicts. (you can sort of resolve this by selecting this option in the edit menu, but you may not always get the results you expect... it has turned off some system fonts on me in the past which cause even more problems).
I'd suggest disabling any non-system fonts you may have and try again (if the prefs things suggested above doesn't work).
