I'm using a new MAC mini, Mountain Lion --- I can view virtually all video formats except MP4 -- how do I set VLC to play MP4 videos as a default?

Sounds like you want VLC to open MP4 files by default.

Get Info (Command-I) in the Finder on an MP4 file. Set "Open with" to VLC and click "Change All..."
