Media Keys to fast forward not skip?

Hi,
Is there any way to set the media keys on a Mac to skip the play forward a few seconds rather than skip to the next track?
I am trying to transcribe some audio, which is on a single audio track. Every now and then I knock the FF/>> button and it skips back to the start of the track, so I lose my place in the recording. Also sometimes I accidentally tap the key rather than holding for it to fast forward, with the same result.
I have tried using other hotkeys, but then you need to have the VLC window selected in order for the hotkeys to work.
I realise I am not using VLC as intended for this, but until I have a foot pedal it's the best thing I can think of. Other free software would be a fine alternative if this is not possible?
Many thanks.
