VLC won't launch

When I start VLC the icon will bounce in the dock for an elongated period. When it finally stops bouncing (indicating the application has launched) it is totally unresponsive. I've already tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC, switching between 32-bit and 64-bit, and downgrading to 1.1. The results are all the same and VLC won't launch. Has anyone else had this problem?
Late 2008 MacBook Pro, OS X 10.7.4

You could have a corrupted preferences file.
You did not mention that you removed VLC preferences, so please do that by quitting VLC, downloading the .dmg, mounting it, going into the Goodies folder and running Delete VLC Preferences (it's an Applescript that will place the VLC prefs file into the trash). Once completed, try launching VLC again.

Still a no-go. Tried that and got a message that no preference files were found.

Try to remove the "org.videolan.vlc" folder manually in ~/Library/Preferences.

Checked in /Library/Preferences and there is no folder called "org.videolan.vlc".
Decided to bite the bullet and did a full reinstall of Lion and VLC still won't launch.

Not /Library/Preferences
~/Library/Preferences
The ~ (tilde) is unix shorthand for your user account folder.
Under Lion, in the Finder, go to the "Go" menu and press the option key.
Library should appear... select it and the window opens. Then go to Preferences and then you should find "org.videolan.vlc".

Deleted org.videolan.vlc and it had no effect.
Finally got VLC to launch again though. I uninstalled Refog Personal Monitor which for some reason had been stopping VLC and the App Store from launching.

Then follow the subsequent manual instructions or check for 3rd party application interference like jjeffrey01 discovered it to be.
