Custom hotkeys not working on 2.0.2 release

Postby sui_page » 01 Jul 2012 13:27

So i just updated to the latest release of VLC media player and noticed my custom hotkeys aren't working anymore. Anyone else having any similar problems?

Which keys did you set? (not the function, the actual keys on your board)

I changed medium forward/backward jump to CMD+SHIFT+X and CMD+SHIFT+Z

So i've just uninstalled and re-installed it without updating. Gonna keep this version until there's a fix

Is it a regression from 2.0.1 or are you using another, older release now?

Thanks for the report. I found the issue, which is related to the handling of capital letters here. I will fix that shortly.
You can try another shortcut which doesn't include "shift". They should work correctly.

Whenever I press Command+Shift+P, the playlist is supposed to come up, or revert back to the current video if pressed again. I used to use this hotkey combination all the time to quickly switch from one video to another, but since 2.0.2, this hotkey combination is no longer working (I have done nothing to VLC Player's settings that would cause this problem). I now have to manually click Window, then Playlist to get to the playlist every time, which is very inconvenient. I'm on Mac OS X 10.6.8, although operating system should have nothing to do with hotkey functionality. How this BASIC keyboard shortcut issue was missed during the the testing of 2.0.2, is beyond me. Please fix this.

Note, according to my window menu, you should be pressing Command-Option-P

My bad; I feel like a real dunce now. My subconscious memory must have forgotten to press option, not shift :P. Thank you for reminding me.

No, your memory is not the fault. Actually, it was Command+Shift+* in VLC 2.0.1 and it should be the same in 2.0.2. We will set that back to the right shortcuts for 2.0.3. So, don't get accustomed to the current ones. :-)

I can confirm that there is a issue with the custom hotkeys. I tried changing short backward jump to only left arrow key and it didn't change (I did this after resetting navigation left). I hope that there will be a fix in the next version...

Does anybody have any further information about this issue? I realize this post is 2 years old, but I am still unable to change any hotkeys, a feature that I used to find very helpful.

I am using VLC 2.1.4 on a MacBook Pro that is still running OSX 10.7.5 (though I can't see how this would be a factor).

Any information you could provide would be helpful - thanks!

My operating system uses a foreign language; Norwegian Bokmål.

Because of this, rather than e.g. Ctrl+Left, my hotkeys appeared as Ctrl+Venstre.

Double-clicking the fields and pressing the proper keys changed the hotkeys to their English versions.

However, I was still unable to use them.

Until I turned VLC off and on again.

Now all my hotkeys are in English and working (even though my operating system still uses a foreign language).

Hopefully this helps someone out there on the long tail.

Try to reset VLCs preferences. If it is still not working with the newest VLC version, we need more details. Which language? Which hotkey exactly?

Upon revisiting this issue, I realize that it is not broken after all. You simply need to quit and restart VLC in order to get it to recognize any custom hotkeys. I can't remember now if that's how it has always been, but it's good enough for me. Thank you mikalmadsen for pointing me in the right direction!
