strange transcoding problem

Postby arfung » 08 Apr 2006 21:34

I'm using the command line of the nightlies (4/6/06 build) to transcode from mpeg2 to .mp4. On one run, it generates a perfect quicktime file (m4v, m4a). Then, I change the cropping from (croptop=48, cropbottom =48) to (croptop=56, cropbottom=56), and the resulting file no longer opens. The first output file shows good header data in metadata hootenany, but the second output file won't even open in the metadata hootenany app. I think some bug in the transcoding routine is messing up the container when I change the crop paramenters. Here are the two commandlines:

works:
/Applications/VideoSound/VideoLanClient/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC --intf dummy "/Volumes/Boris/VideoStuff/SkateTestIn.mpeg" --sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=1024,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,deinterlace,hq,croptop=48,cropbottom=48,height=360,width=640}:standard{mux=mp4,dst=/Volumes/Boris/VideoStuff/SkateTestOut.mp4,access=file}"

broken:
/Applications/VideoSound/VideoLanClient/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC --intf dummy "/Volumes/Boris/VideoStuff/SkateTestIn.mpeg" --sout="#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=1024,acodec=mp4a,ab=128,deinterlace,hq,croptop=56,cropbottom=56,height=360,width=640}:standard{mux=mp4,dst=/Volumes/Boris/VideoStuff/SkateTestOut.mp4,access=file}"

very strange. all help is appreciated. Should I also post this to the streaming forum?

arfung:

One of the developers of VLC have stated before that VLC's transcoding is less than ideal right now and recommended to try iSquint. I've been using iSquint to transcode various sources to mp4 and it works quite well. The universal binary has excellent performance especially for the mpeg4 option (as opposed to h264 option), and allows you to override the ipod settings if you wanna do hi-res, hi-quality stuff. Good luck.

arfung: sorry, I forgot to mention I've also been using iSquint to crop to mp4/h264 targets as well.

Border

Postby elam110 » 09 Apr 2006 00:09

I don't know if anyone addressed this, or if you chosen not to, but if it is possible to have borderless playback on the new version, or at least have the option to turn it off. That would be great, i like the current PPC versions clean, no-border look around the video!
Thanks!

maad:

Thanks for this! I had been waiting for ffmpegx to come out in universal. I thought that isquint was just for ipod (small format) conversion. I just checked it out, and it is perfect for what I want to do.

Converge

I canno't get subtitles to show on my 0.8.5-Test2 build with my Intel-MBP. The subtitles have the exact same name as the movie-file, and are in the same directory, but when I choose "subtitles track -> track 1" the following error message occurs:

"subsdec: failed to convert subtitle encoding.
Try manually setting a character-encoding before you open the file."

Note that it worked just fine on my old G4 PowerPC-laptop and that the mPlayer on my xbox reads the srt-files without any complains. I've also tried to manually select the srt-files when I open the movie-file, but no luck.

Re: audio

Postby yapez » 09 Apr 2006 22:58

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is a known issue or not since people seem to be busy worrying about other issues. For the majority of the nightlies that I have downloaded in the last several weeks ( i test them every few days ), none of my h.264 or "mpeg4" videos have had audio playback. I get h264/mpeg4 videos from a number of sources including my own encodes done with iSquint, none of which have had audio in the last couple weeks of nightly builds.

My test subjects for yesterday's (april 7th -- trunk-intel-20060407-0123.dmg) build are freely available:

http://zdpub.vo.llnwd.net/o2/dltv/episo ... tv.050.mov (h264)
http://zdpub.vo.llnwd.net/o2/dltv/episo ... tv.050.mp4 (mpeg4)

Both play correctly in Quicktime.

I'm having the exact same problem as Maad is. I would like to play some h264 encoded videos I have, but I cannot hear the audio. At present, I am playing the videos simultaneously through Realplayer and VLC. It seems Realplayer plays the sounds (though not the video), whereas VLC plays the video (but not the sound. Thanks for the nightly releases though. Hopefully there will be a release in the near future that address this issue. Other than that, I haven't experience very many bugs with the program

Considering this thread has reached 9 pages, instead of chiding people why don't you guys post an updated list of known issues (let's say mpeg4-audio) and solved issues on the first post.

Almost everybody here is trying to be helpful in some ways.

At least I didn't forget about it, but since it isn't reproducible on PPC-Macs, that quite hard to fix here. Close to impossible actually ;)

Audio Problem in Mpeg4 video

Postby gresmi » 13 Apr 2006 03:51

I'm having the same problem as mentioned earlier with .mp4 video in trunk-intel-20060407-0123.dmg. Both plain plain mpeg4 created with ffmpeg and H264 format videos suffer. The files play the video perfectly, just audio (AAC 128kbps) doesn't work.

The files work perfectly in Quicktime and DivX player

@gresmi: That's a known issue in these old nightly builds. Try a recent one. It was fixed about 3 days ago.

Not sure where I should post this, but unlike the Windows version, I can't double click to get out of full screen, which is a serious fault, imo... (I'm also lacking the right-click menu in fullscreen, but that's perhaps done on purpose because it is OS X.)

I'm not sure if this has been addressed already, but I hear that intel macs should be capable of playing wmv9 video. I have some wmv9 videos contained withing .avi and not being able to play them on my mac has been a longstanding problem.

Has this issue been resolved with the intel macs + vlc, or are you still working on it? Thanks!

This is done by a separate QUICKTIME component. VLC does not use such components, and therefore VLC cannot play WMV9 files.

 trunk-intel-20060415-0051.dmg

This nightly build now:

- successfully plays the audio portion of my mpeg4 test files.
- green triangles from earlier builds are gone.

using an MBP. Thanks.
