playing m2t (0.8.4)

According to the specs I believed VLC would play an m2t file from the internet, supposedly taken with a Canon HD10 camera. So that's the reason I installed VLC.
However, when I try it the player nothing appears, neither a picture nor sound. I can hear the CPU crunching (makes a specific noise on the speakers of my laptop) and the progress bar in the VLC controller is advancing, but the time indication stays at 0:00:00. Was m2t playback not yet working with 0.8.4?
