what's up with WMV3 not playing?

Postby vzdrok » 28 Mar 2006 19:47

I am using Mac OS X.3.9.

WHy can't I open microsoft media player movies called WMV3?

I get this window...

main: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `WMV3'.
VLC probably does not support this sound or video format.

How do I get the right codec?
Or
in regular-folk speak:
"I do I make it work?"

THANKS

You can't. This codec isn't supported and won't be for quite some time. It's a proprietary format and MS does hardly release any information about it.

The only ways to play this on a Mac are either installing Windows Media Player (yes, it does also exist for the Mac, but even worse) or installing the Flip4Mac plugin so you can play such clips with QuickTime.

Thanks!!!

flip4MAc?

is that a free thing...
never mind, I'll google it.

for some reason I can't get my Microsoft media player to work--it won't even give me a screen, just a bouncing icon in my menu bar... so I gave up.

So thanks.

VLC Player Intercepts WMP Movies

Postby DudeAsInCool » 30 Mar 2006 14:02

I have a similar problem. Lately, whenever I download a movie which requires WMPlayer, VLC intercepts it, but just plays the sound. This means I have to get the info of the download, and change VLC to WMV. Why has this begun to happen and is there a way to adjust the preferences?

I have an Intel Mac and am using a Safari 10.4.5.browser; the latest VLC for Mac OS X, and Windows Media Player 9.0

You probably installed VLC after the WMP, so it kind of overwrote the default application for WMV-files.
In the dialogue where you can tell the Finder to open your WMV with WMP, there is a button titled "Apply to all" or similar, which applies this setting to all files of that type including the ones you'll download in the future.

For Debian on x86 I use MPlayer which can use the win32 codec.

"Get Info" on the files, choose the application you wish to open the document with. Then, feel free to hit "Change All...". This is under 10.4.6, but is mostly the same back through X beta.
