Re: Crash: Feb 23 build with NSV stream

Postby The DJ » 01 Mar 2006 21:06

Crash watching NSV from http://lsr.tpolm.org:8000/lsv.nsv
This is not a Intel specific issue. Apparently this problem occurs when we loose the connection to a NSV stream, and we automatically reconnect to it.

Well the general speed increase of the mini should enable it to playback MPEG2 HDTV in my opinion, but no one tested it yet I guess.

The thing has digitial audio now as well I see. Seems like the perfect Multimedia brick :D

Hi DJ, thanks - it seems to work much more stably with the release
0.8.4a PPC build - the image comes up every time, hasn't crashed once
yet, although it lost sound after a few minutes on the PPC build,
under Rosetta.

Oddly, the Intel build almost always crashes immediately after connecting
to the stream - I get a second or two of audio, no video, and then the crash.

The stream is at http://lsr.tpolm.org:8000/lsv.nsv for your testing.

FYI, I just tried that stream in the 0.8.4a PPC version on my old 1 GHz PowerBook (still running 10.3.9) and it crashes right away:

Thread 8 Crashed:

Anyway, back to the new Mac mini - the Intel GMA950 chipset supposedly has the ability to decode HD streams on-chip, but given that I want to play MPEG-2 Transport Stream (".ts") files, I'd have to use VLC to do that. How is VLC supposed to be able to tell the onboard GPU "Hey, VLC here, I'm wanting to decode an MPEG-2 HD stream, help me out"?

I think I will wait on buying a Mac mini for my living room until there is a Universal Binary of VLC and there is some optimal way for VLC to get the GPU to do the HD decoding :)

VLC 180i on Intel Mini Solo MP2 WORKS

Postby BirdmanBob » 03 Mar 2006 10:01

Never posted before. Sorry if I'm breakin' some rules or ettiquette.

I have an Intel Mini Solo hooked up to my Motorola HD DVR (Adelphia Cable). Using iRecord to grab MP2 stream. VLC plays it back fine at 1080i if I use all the default pref settings. There's some artifcacts in the video occasionally but no apparent dropped frames. Also note that AC3 content (on the DVR) plays from the Mini as "Dolby Pro Logic" (according to my stereo). Also, if I use "image settings" in the prefs to pump up the brightness, I get bunches of dropped frames. That's all I've determined after playin' with it for a few hours.

Just wanted to throw this out there in case there's something system-specific that someone might like me to check out for 'em.

Re: VCD still causes crashes

Postby Guest » 04 Mar 2006 08:21

There is an issue in the Table Of Contents reading on Mac Intel. I know it exists, i'm just not totally sure what is causing it yet, but i expect to find it quite soon now.
This should be fixed now thanks to demo-n
Feb23 version, iMac w/ 10.4.5 with the latest security update. I have tried with and without disabling MMX and SSE options. (Are we still supposed to disbale those options?)

Sorry, playing a VCD does not cause a crash anymore, but it gives an error message and makes a horrible, unbearably metallic noise.

DVD scrubbing gives similar error messages as before even though it fast forwards fine, but a little annoying. I tried it with a commercial DVD this time. Other than those error messages, it plays fine.

The only truly dissapointing part is wmv playback. The image quality is horrible, even though it plays fine on a PC. I can email the file if you want, it is about 1.3MB. I could not even get video from another wmv file; it gave an error message and all I had was the audio.

Just a little glitch...

I'm using a MBP 2.0Ghz with the 23rd Feb nightly. I'm actually impressed how well the build works but there's just a small niggle. When I select 'Float on top from the video menu it remembers it for a while but when I open a coupld more windows it dissapears.

Great job apart from that, I'll post anymore info I get right here.

any plans to port the win32 codec loader?

Postby lukemcurley » 10 Mar 2006 14:20

great work, i've found that the feb builds were very solid on my imac 17" intel only crashed sometimes when changing to full screen.

i set the video to open gl and all works good. just downloading the march 10 build now, i'll get back to you after playing around with it.

for a developers point of view how near to full implementation is vlc for intel mac. also what type of performance increase is there with the intels instead of powerpc?

VLC for x86-OSX got the same features as VLC for PPC-OSX, so it got a little less features than the Windows or Linux port, but we catch up a bit on every release ;)
I've got no idea about the speed increases, but they should be really noticeably, since most of the codecs we are using are more optimised for x86 than for PPC. I'll probably be able to do some tests on this in about 3 week on one of Apple's workshops.

@ randomfreak: that should be do-able but I haven't heard from anyone who is working on that. We won't provided binary versions with this loader anyway, since this would break our own licence.

The March 10 nightly is working great for me on an iMac Core Duo 2GHz.....I'm customizing a Core Solo Mini with the addition of a 2GHz Core Duo (Yonah T2500) chip in a few days, so I'll be sure to test VLC with that puppy as well.

One issue that I have noticed is when playing movies, the "SystemUIServer" process locks up. This causes Beachballs when I move the mouse over the right hand side of the menubar...basically spot light and everything to the left of it, except the text based menus.

Killing that process fixes the problem, but it happens as soon as I start playing movies again.

I'm using the nightly from the 10th but saw the same behavior on the one from the 9th.

Quartz Playback?

Postby tji » 13 Mar 2006 07:40

I see in the first post that Quartz playback is not supported..

Can any of the developers comment on how difficult this will be to add back?

I have been trying to get the MythTV frontend running on my new Mac Mini core duo, and I ran into the same crash as happens when VLC uses quartz:

0 ...ickTimeComponents.component 0x98e0043d YUV420To2VUY_W1x
<snip>
19 com.apple.QuickTime 0x9442bc35 DecompressSequenceFrameWhen

The same thing happens with MPlayer when using the Quartz video output.

It's a bit odd that it worked well, for me at least, in the PowerPC version. But, it fails 100% of the time now with the Intel version.

Any suggestions for how to proceed with this? Or, is anyone already working on it?

No one is actively working on it here :(

I suspect that it's an alignment issue, or something like that. but to be honest, i don't really have a clue.

Thanks for the response. I'll poke around some more, and see if I come up with anything. But, I don't know anything about QuickTime, so I'm not too optimistic.[/i]

Using VLC Intel build with DVArchive

Postby Zuul » 14 Mar 2006 19:09

Hi, I've been using the PPC version of VLC with DVArchive without too many problems in my Intel iMac. The Intel version works better though, so I'd like to use that. The problem is this, when I try to run the Intel version from within DVArchive, I get the following error:

ERROR: EXEC:: Error running command /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC -- /Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC: cannot execute

When I run it directly by double-clicking the icon, it runs fine.

I am using the same command that I used for the PPC version:

/Applications/VLC.app/Contents/MacOS/VLC

Has something changed in the Intel version? Or am I missing something?

Thanks for your help.

Will VLC for MacBook Pro have region-free capabilities?

Postby Tadeo » 16 Mar 2006 09:08

Hello -

I'm about to make the leap to the Mac world from Windows and purchase a MacBook Pro. The DVDs in my collection are from various regions, which hasn't been a problem using the DVD Region-free software available for Windows. I've read that this feature has been available on earlier Mac versions of VLC, but I've been scanning all the Mac forums trying to confirm that VLC will offer this function for the new Intel Macs and I have not been able to confirm this yet.

Thanks in advance for clarifying this. My move to the Mac world is contingent on my being able to play DVDs from any region.

If you have an old DVD drive, VLC will work for all your DVDs. If you have a RPC2 drive, VLC won't (whatever the OS).

What is a RPC2 drive?

Postby Tadeo » 16 Mar 2006 12:08

If you have an old DVD drive, VLC will work for all your DVDs. If you have a RPC2 drive, VLC won't (whatever the OS).

Thanks for your reply. I'm sorry, I don't know what an RPC2 drive is. Is this the type of DVD drive used on the new MacBook Pros? And if it is, is there any way to modify it, by flashing the firmware, for example?

Thanks again for any suggestions you can offer.

Tadeo
