VLC restarts play even when told not to

I am running Version 3.0.20 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) on a mid-2012 13" MacBook Pro running Catalina (10.15.7). I have been using VLC for . . . at least fifteen years, probably more.

When reopening a file that I am in the middle of, I have the preference set to Ask, and VLC dutifully asks whether I want to restart or continue. When, however, I say continue, it restarts! I am mostly listening to multi-hour audiobooks, and I have to keep guessing where I left off because VLC doesn't take me back to it.

Does anyone know what is wrong?
