Why is VLC saving as M4V instead of MP4?

Im converting various video files (.avi, .dvdmedia, etc) to MP4. When VLC finishes converting, the file has a .m4v extension.

Any idea why this is happening?

m4v and MP4 are synonymous. Rename the file if you need a different extension. The file format is the same.
