Convert with Deinterlacing

Postby minimel » 26 Mar 2023 14:56

Hello,

I'm a new user - thanks to the VidoLAN Organization for making VLC Media Player available.

I'm using VLC Media Player 3.0.18 on macOS 12.6.1. I've been experimenting with deinterlacing DV video and generally understand the associated Deinterlace settings under Preferences...

My goal is to Convert the DV video to H.264 and retain the deinterlacing result I see during playback, but I've been unsuccessful. In the graphic of the Convert dialog box shown on the Wiki page under Documentation:Interface, there's a checkbox for "Deinterlace" which isn't present in the version I'm running. I've also researched and found videos showing the Convert dialog box with a Deinterlace checkbox, but these don't look like the dialog box I see on my version with my macOS.

How can I retain the deinterlacing settings for a Converted file with my version of VLC Media Player and my macOS?

I am also having a similar issue so I thought I'd bump the thread. But my situation is a little different, so here's my story:

I'm on Windows 10, and I can see the deinterlace option on convert.

I'm trying to make an MP4 of a DVD I own (Tale Spin collection) so we can watch them on a trip on my phone.

MakeMKV ripped the DVDs fine.

When I watch the MKV in VLC, there's no interlacing visible. It may be, though, that VLC is automatically removing the interlacing in playback, which is pretty cool. But the MKVs are uncompressed and won't play on my phone, so I want to convert them to a MP4, which my phone can play and will be a more reasonable size.

But when I use the convert command, Video - H264 + MPEG 4 Audio ( AAC ), the video is clearly interlaced on playback.

So I reexport them, and this time check the deinterlace box. When I watch the exported MP4 video in VLC, it's still clearly interlaced.

Any idea what's happening?

I think I solved my own problem.

In the export settings I go into the properties for the video and audio encoding and under the videos tab there's a sub tab for filters, and one of those filters is "deinterlace". So turning on that filter (and checking the deinterlace box for good measure) seems to have resulted in proper deinterlacing on export.

Hopefully this will help someone in the future!
