No VLC through HDMI on a Mac Mini

Postby FrostyRose » 17 Aug 2022 04:16

I am trying to introduce images, documents and videos into an already functioning streaming system from my Mac Mini, using VLC and the HDMI port on the Mini. At the moment I have two Soni HDMI cameras connected to a switch. The output fom the switch ports to a BlackmagicDegigns Intensity Shuttle which presents the data to software on an Imac for capture, recording and streaming. It has worked perfectly for years.

I can get VLC to display all types of files that I will be using on the screen of the Mini. I cannot get VLC to output the images and videos of the same files to the HDMI port of the Mini. If I look at the screens section in my Mac preferences, it sees the connection through the HDMI port as a second screen. I do not want to mirror the screen because that would output all sorts of unwanted screen data. I have read almost the entire documentation for VLC with no mention of anything like this. I do not see any setting in VLC preferences that would select the HDMI port for output. I have not seen this issue addressed in the Forum anywhere.

In short I want HDMI output from my Mini to appear as a data from a document camera. Is this possible? If it is possible, how do I do it in VLC?

Please note that I am an older person (83), who is not very tech savvy. Thank you.
