video files quit playback

Hello randomly for months VLC has played some video files, I think most .mkv and at random times the playback quits, or the playback skips to the end of the video and then exits as if the video playback is finished. The correct total duration of the video file I can see in the playlist window.

It is a global VLC on OSX problem as I had an old intel mac mini and now today I bought a new m1 mac mini. Both do the exact same thing. On different OSX. New M1 Mac mini is on latest osx 12.4 I had OSX 10.x on old Mac mini.

No settings fix this, hardware accel on or off, skip frames on or off it does not matter. There are no messages in the log file or errors. How can I fix this please this is driving me crazy. I thought my old mac mini was too old to play files right and I just spent hundreds on a brand new mac mini that does the same thing!!

I am using various version of VLC v3 latest official and also I have tried v4 nightly but that did not work at all. Thanks.
