full screen on new 14" macbook pro adds black bars on the side

Postby er1cnl » 30 Oct 2021 13:00

when I'm trying to watch a video in full screen it shrinks the video by adding black bars on the side.

if I play it in the regular window I can drag the screen size to fit snugly to the sides of the screen, but when I enter full screen it shrinks the video size.
if I play the same videos in Quick Time player it wil just fill the screen.

Can you please provide a screenshot showing the issue?

on the screenshots, where I take a screenshot with command+shift+3 you can't see the difference, it looks like it spans from side to side, so let me try taking photos of the screen instead.

Can you try if it makes any difference wether you use native/non-native fullscreen mode?

You can change it at: PreferencesVideoUse the native fullscreen mode
Then restart VLC for the change to actually have an effect.

Just to make sure, which of the modes works?

checking "use the native fullscreen mode" works.

putting a checkmark on that automatically checks the "window decorations" option, and greys it out to prevent toggling it off again..

Thanks for the feedback, I've opened a ticket about the wrong fullscreen size: https://code.videolan.org/videolan/vlc/-/issues/26291

This will probably not get fixed in time to make it into the upcoming 3.0.17 though.

For me, on a notch-equipped 16" MacBook Pro, just unchecking "Scale to fit below built-in camera" in VLC's Finder info window removed the left and right black bars in full screen.
(I have "Use the native fullscreen mode" unchecked in VLC's preferences").

This box was checked by default - I suppose that, unless there are issues with it, it would be nice if it was unchecked by default.
