Crashing on Shut Down

Postby producerguy » 18 Feb 2021 17:40

VLC consistently crashes on "quit" command and has to be "forced quit" everytime. This happens both on Catalina and Big Sur, 2014 iMac, 32GB RAM, SSD main drive.

Tried removing cache files, plist etc. no change in behavior. Latest version VLC installed.

So the only thing that seems to help so far (not consistently) is to stop playback before quitting. When originally installed that was never the case, and I haven't done a re-install because I've spent too much time organizing my media playback options.

Is this with VLC 3.0.12 or a previous release?

I run VLC only in macOS 10.7. I confirm this misbehaviour in the most up-to-date release of VLC (3.0.12). When you quit the app in the midst of playback a crash alert pops up. What's interesting is that the buttons in the alert are both non-responsive for some time and only not before unknown time elapses that it becomes possible to dismiss the alert by clicking on either of them.

I wasn't able to find VLC log files other than the reports in Console

Please try to reset VLCs preferences.

This happens on the newest release .16, and stopping playback doesn't help. It often still crashes still requiring force-quit.

I've done all the typical troubleshooting; removing/trashing prefs, even using third-party uninstallers to make sure all elements are gone and re-installing.

This is a bug, clear and simple. Not a deal-killer (especially since it's free) but highly annoying.

If you want to help to get it fixed, please try a nightly build from https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-3.0/ ... os-x86_64/ and provide to us the content from the macOS crash window once it appears.

This is likely not a simple bug to fix, so some help is needed, if you want to have it fixed. :-)
