VLC causes KP on M1 Mac mini / Big Sur when playing Bluray discs

Postby cappy2112 » 14 Feb 2021 04:50

I've just installed Version 3.0.12.1 Vetinari (Apple Silicon) on Big Sur 11.2, installed the BluRay files
per this website -> https://www.videosolo.com/tutorials/pla ... h-vlc.html.

I'm using an Archgon USB3.0 external disc player plugged into the native USB ports on the Macmini.
When the movie started to play, the OS had a KP.
I've rebooted, sent the crash report to Apple. tried again. Same problem.

I then moved the USB drive to one of the Thunderbolt ports, tried again.
Same problem. KP

VLC has no problem playing regular DVD discs though.

If the VLC developers would like I copy of the crash dump, send me a PM I'll be happy to send it.
It's obviously repeatable

Have you tried MakeMKV for decrypting? http://www.makemkv.com/libmmbd/

No. The checkbox in MakeMKV that allows it to decrypt for VLC is disabled.

You said that the decrypt check box in MakeMKV is disabled: maybe it's because MakeMKV is not registered. Use the registration code in the last link to see if it enables the decrypt function.

I already pasted the key into the registration box. No change for me.
Maybe since the KP, the reg got wiped out. I’ll check that again

We checked the panic log and there is no direct point of action for us. I fear that we actually need to test this feature ourselves on Apple Silicon a bit more thoroughly and then ask Apple to fix their kernel.

Version 1.16.0 of MakeMKV should get rid of this problem. https://www.makemkv.com/download/

Perhaps, but 1.16.0 has other problems.
It just stops writing to disk.

The only way I've found as a workaround is to decrypt the Blu-Ray entirely with MakeMKV into its own folder and wrapping it back up into an ISO. VLC will also cause a KP if you attempt to play the BDMV folder directly without wrapping it up. The only issue I'm aware of with this workaround is that there seem to be no way of using menus since there is no Java available for Apple Silicon.

@Seesaw Would you recommend a program for making ISOs on the Mac? I haven't needed to do that on my Mac yet.

thanks

I'm having too many problems with Makemkv, it's just too unstable.
The checkboxes to enable decryption on other programs are always disabled for me.
Is there a decent commercial program that works on Apple Silicon?
