3.0.12.1 M1 bug report thread

Postby dontango » 21 Jan 2021 20:31

So far after running this for a single day i can already report the following issues:

- Closing VLC from dock often reports a failure and the program crashes
- Pressing escape while watching a video in full screen resulted in kernel panic crash and hard reboot of the macbook once (the first and only time i have ever had a crash on this machine)
- CPU load seems to be about the same or even higher than on the 3.0.11.1 x86 version via Rosetta

I would like to know if others are running into the same (severe) issues.

I tried both of your scenarios multiple times and did not experience any problems. I shut VLC down from the dock many times. I also pressed ESC while in full screen movies multiple times.

MacOS 11.1 on Mac Air M1
VLC 3.0.12.1 Vetinari (Apple Silicon)

We run the same system, let's see how this will develop in the next weeks... As i said, i had the hard crash once. Might only happen every 100 times, might only happen with certain media. Might even be related to Big Sur and not to VLC, at all. We need more input for sure. ;) All i can say is i ran the Rosetta VLC for weeks with zero issues, at all.
How is your CPU load, did you compare it to the older intel version?

CPU varied between 11 to 15% while viewing a 720p MKV in full screen

Happens to me from time to time with my own compiled version.

It would be very nice if you guys could paste the crash reports somewhere on the internet (pastebin,...) so we can check them easily. For the CPU load, we generally see a 20 to 50% speed increase between the Rosetta and the native version of the application. We are not aware of the problem you describe.

Uh, and if you find more Apple Silicon specific issues, please post them here. Having a collection thread is a nice idea.

Nothing major: the full screen, mouse hovering, control panel is not scaled properly. That, or there's a UI preference I don't know about.

You can resize the panel by grabbing a corner. Does this solve your problem?

Ah, OK, yes, it works for the length, but, overall on the M1, it stays twice as big: the height of the panel and the size of the icons. Is it possible to manually resize that?

My hunch tells me it's related to the Retina display.

Can you please try to make the buttons smaller, by taking the bottom right edge, and actually dragging the edge upwards?

If this does not work, it would be a bug.

I tried with the trackpad and a mouse (because click & drag is sometimes difficult with a trackpad), but all I can modify is the length of the controller.

The control bar in full-screen mode is fixed. In other words, resizing the control panel in the full screen does not work. anyone have the same problem with Apple silicon VLC?

Are we describing the same problem? See the last few replies in the thread.

Hi ! Since I've made the change to the M1 version of VLC, I also have problems with the control bar :
-It is HUGE  in full screen mode
-I can only move it, I've tried resizing it by taking every edge, to no avail.

I managed to disable the control bar in full screen mode for the moment.
Also, when I wanted to increase the volume or advance in the video using the mouse, I used to have some kind of a white control bar at the top or on the right of the screen, which were very useful. With the new version those bars have disappeared.

I cannot change the controller size. It is impossible to drag from the corner to resize.

Hello,

The fullscreen controller size should be fixed in today's update!
