VLC to move to Apple Silicon Code?

Postby stardomains » 19 Nov 2020 15:24

Will VLC move to Apple Silicon code? Runs fine on Rosetta 2 but just wondering if there are plans?

@stardomains
My understanding is that Apple Silicon Macs can now run iOS Apps natively.

So it is possible for VLC-iOS to be made available for Apple Silicon, obviously not the same feature set as the macOS Intel version.

There are plans, but no defined timeline. I don't know if any of the devs have access to an M1 Mac at this point?

In the meantime I would be curious to know if anyone experiences any challenges running VLC with Rosetta 2.
Providing logs, messages, configuration info (VLC, OS, Hardware) and a clear explanation of the issue always helps the problem solvers help you, even if they don't end up solving the issue. Just think what you would need if you were solving someone else's problem. Additional: Always looking for eager and capable MacOS X developers to join the VLC team - for more information see here.

I initially had no audio when trying to play a MKV file on my M1 MacBook Pro. A reinstallation of VLC seemed to fix that problem.

The next update of VLC will add native support for Apple Silicon, probably this week.

This is great news! Thanks for the efforts. Will VLC be still using OpenGL to render video on AS? Is it possible to use Vulkan+MoltenVk to get Metal based rendering? I'm curious about current support for this on macOS. Thanks!

VLC v3 will remain on OpenGL also on Apple Silicon. The technologies you mentioned might be used in v4.

Thanks, Felix! BTW I had a chance to check out your posts about efficient video playback on your blog. It was very interesting to read. I am getting started on Swift/macOS development (mostly C++ developer) and looking to contribute/help test my favourite video player both on Linux and Mac.

What will the benefits be with the upgrade to Apple Silicon version? What version number will it be?

I just got my Mac Mini with M1 CHIP.

Please may I ask 2 technical question about VLC Player resolution on Mac OS BigSur.

1. I have the new Mac MINI (M1CHIP) connected to a 4k display via HDMI.
My display settings on Mac Mini is Scaled zoom, which makes it easier to read text for me. However I understand this will not reduce resolution on Video playback. Please can you confirm 4k Videos will continue to play at 4k on VLC player even with this “Display Scaled] setting?

2. What settings should i use on VLC player on my Mac for my 23.796fps Movies?

Hello,

An official release of VLC for Apple Silicon was just published. You'll be updated from the Intel binary automatically.

Enjoy!

Thank you for the update.

This is IOS version which is translated by Rosetta.

Any plans for full Universal App for Apple Silicon?

The current native version for Apple Silicon is available here, which is not running using Rosetta anymore: https://get.videolan.org/vlc/3.0.12.1/m ... -arm64.dmg

Thank u. I downloaded it, but it seems to be same version. In is IOS as KIND, instead of UNIVERSAL as KIND. Apple informed me that UNIVERSAL is a full Silicon version, but this is IOS.

Perhaps I am mistaken?

You are mistaken

Universal app is BOTH for intel and apple silicon. There is no universal version VLC for download. There is one version for intel and one version for apple silicon. And surprisingly VLC for apple silicon is for... apple silicon. Doesn't matter if it says IOS.

Tbh, it shouldn't say iOS anywhere. If it does, I'd love to know where and fix it (this is a syntactic problem only and doesn't affect the usability in any way).

Select About this Mac from the Apple Icon.
System Report
Select Applications under the Software section
Right hand column named Kind

That's a bug in Apple's software. Thanks for mentioning it. I'll report it.

Please can I kindly request some clarification.

I use VLC player on my MAC MINI (M1).
My Mac is connected to a 4k Monitor via HDMI.

I set the Mac Display settings to 1080p Scale, otherwise the fonts and menus are too small.

My Question is if I play 4K Videos via VLC are these playing in 1080p or 4K.
On VLC Player [Preferences / Video / Fullscreen settings] the screen resolution shows 1080 when i scale to 1080. See screen shot below.

However when i change Mac Display settings to Default for display instead of Scaled then this shows 3840x1260.

So am concerned that only watching 1080p content which the TV is upscaling instead of 4k. Obviously I could leave Display in default but the menus are unreadable as too small.

Does the record facility keep the quality of the video?
I know QUICKTIME can trim and clip without reducing quality.

The reason i ask is it is called RECORD which to me indicates a compression.

There is no way to edit 2 parts of a video right? So delete 2 parts and save.

No, this is currently not possible with VLC.
