Great job with VLC, and I used the cast function last evening and its great.
Will for sure be used more in the future for sure when the subtitles are added!

So far, subtitles are supported only for files which cannot be decoded by the Chromecast device and need to be converted first. For files supported by Chromecast, we can't show subtitles right now. Sounds contradictory, I know.
Hi Felix,

Then the fix is trivial I suppose, one simply needs to re-encode whenever subtitles are used.

Cheers

I wouldn't call this trivial, even if we support it with software encoding. Hardware encoding on android hasn't been merged yet and it's battery consuming and performance limited without.

We have three differents solutions:
- Hardware blending + hardware encoding
- Extraction of all subtitles into a temporary file before
- Trying stream chunk encoding if chromecast are supporting it.

Hello,

I was expecting this new release 3.0.7 to support subtitles through Chromecast, but it still doesn’t !

Seriously I really don’t understand why it’s so complicated.

VLC is a wonderful app but when will this « simple » feature will be available ?

Thanks

Hi, in any case we can't add it in 3.0 releases if it needs new features or rewrite to be available, because 3.0.x is a stable feature-frozen branch. We're working on this for the 4.0 release but I don't know when it will be possible. But again, this is not simple. :/

Just registered to this forum for the same thing. Subtitles are needed when casting, I hope some progress has been made.

Does anyone know that this problem has already been solved? When will subtitle feature become available for VLC Media Player on Chromecast?

It would be great to have subtitles to work with Chromecast.

I am using Windows 10 but I suffer from this problem as much.

Is there any solution how can I get a subtitle at this time to work on Chromecast?

What about plex ? Seems quite a good solution to cast with subtitles (and free), I tried it yesterday.

I too created an account to make this post.

These poor VLC Devs. Such a small team of hard working dedicated people who deserve our upmost thanks for creating the most badass video player ever made.
People here making demands make me chuckle, which is nice at least - this is free software. Enjoy what you're given (for free) without complaint.
They'll get to it as soon as they can.

Also, people - you can cast from Google Chrome quite easily. No addons needed, don't install anything.
Just click the three dots and "Cast" - viola.

Ya'll have a good day meow.

I understand, but I have been watching this issue for two years now... and this quote of the owner makes me think they will not get to it as soon as they can.
Well, the issue is that Chromecast does not support many subtitles, and reencoding everything is a waste of CPU...
I think this is a case where the devs are more focused on optimising instead of listening to concerns. The solution is fairly simple, but really irritating, they should re-encode everything, which is a waste of CPU, but a waste people are willing to have because now there is no solution. Yes, the main problem is not VLC, but rather Chromecast support, but please, devs, if you read this, please implement this, me and probably a lot more others have been waiting for this "waste of cpu" for years.

Now that's of my chest, thanks for delivering a great product and keeping it free, you guys rock.

Not for me, at least some mp4 I am testing, subs don't work.
Anywyay the solution (already submitted here by someone) is easy and free:

open video file with VLC and the sub. Then from Chrome, cast (3 dots at right upper corner) your PC Desktop (choosing it from sources) to Chromecast.
That's all.

[MKV subtitles unreadable on my TV via Chromecast]

Hello everyone, I'm asking for your help as I failed to find the solution so far on the Net...

I have a last gen Google Chromecast, a 2011 Sony TV, a 2020 iPhone SE and the VLC app installed on my iPhone.

My iPhone contains MKV files but the pb is that I can't play the subtitles embedded in those MKV files when they are streamed to my TV via the Chromecast, I can only play the video.

Maybe there is a manipulation to do, an app to use or a new Chromecast-type device to use (at a reasonable price) so that these subtitles integrated into the MKVs can be played on my TV via the Chromecast ...

Thank you very much 🙏🙏

Greg
