Thanks.

Since then I've dumped that distro, erased the HDD (my data is on a separate HDD), reinstalled Win10, and installed another distro. Three times!

I'm now on Ubuntu 19.10 in dual boot mode and VLC worked perfectly from first go re showing all my network UPnP devices.

Why so many distros? On one VLC refused to work correctly. On the second Samba refused to work properly so I could share a folder. 24 hours ago that distro did not give me the option to change to a static IP address (the GUI did not show me what each field needed). Now on Ubuntu 19.10 Pulseaudio Equalizer is refusing to work!

If anyone who knows of a distro that has all this work first time??

- easy change to static IP address mode
- VLC
- Pulseaudio Equalizer
- Samba shared folder

I'm a relative newbie, but I've tried Linux on and off every 18 months these past 10 years (and given up each time!)

Why does Linux have to be so hard??

Skris88, it looks like your question is better placed somewhere more specific to linux + media players - this thread is specifically about VLC + Mac + UPnP problems.

I understand this is. Mac thread, but Macs are Linux too.

By the way, UPnP of VLC has since stopped working on Ubuntu 19.10, after working once. :-(

Can anyone help, please?

Note that after VLC UPnP stopped working - not before - I installed Kodi and the UPnP devices show up and play perfectly. Same hardware, just different players. Clearly a VLC issue.

Hope this info helps.

Thanks!

Hello,
my today solution: another running upnp-server on my mac (eye-connect) was the cause for not to be able to activate upnp in VLC and not to see any upnp-server in my network. I removed the eye-connect-folder from library to recycle-bin and VLC now find the upnp device in the network.
Looking from other mac on vlc to the upnp server list showed the Mac with the eye-connect server - so i had the idea to kill this app from the mac.

So maybe also other running upnp server Apps on a mac (or a pc? or also Ubuntu?) will disable VLC to find upnp-Servers....?

i 2 saw my hdhomerun disappear from vlc upnp when i enabled eyetv sharing on the same box...both showed up in vlc on a separate mac, so it seems vlc can't handle 2 upnp devices if local

2021, UPnP is still unavailable on the current VLC downloaded from Homebrew.

Version: 3.0.16 Vetinari (Intel 64bit)

Solution:
1. Open System Preferences
2. Click Network
3. Choose the WiFI SSID your UPnP Server is on
4. Click Advanced
5. Click TCP/IP Tab
6. Set Configure IPv6 to "Automatically"
7. On VLC press CTRL+L
8. Right Click Universal Plug'n'Play, click Enable.

Supplemental Solution:
1. Open System Preferences
2. Click Network
3. On the left Pane, choose Network your UPnP is on (Wifi, Ethernet, etc...)
4. Click the (...) dropdown beside the + and - button
5. Click Service Order
6. Drag the connection you use on top. So if you are on WIFi, "WiFi" should be on top.

None of the above workarounds solved the problem for me.

Environment is a MBP 17,1 running OSX 14.2.1. VLC version is 3.0.20.

Happy to provide more info (such as logs) as required.

It seems to work by default in the Windows version of VLC but not in the Linux version. Could be the same situation for MacOS? It was actually a very simple fix for me:

View > Playlist

That puts VLC in the playlist mode and all of the uPnP / dlna type options come up after you're in playlist mode. I don't know why this isn't turned on automatically in the Linux version the way it is in Windows though.
