Version 3.0.10 Crash

I'm using MacOS Mojave 10.14.5

Just upgraded to newest version of VLC. Player crashes randomly usually towards the end of file. Media player totally freezes. Have to restart, and everything is fine.

Having the same problem, using Mac OS 10.14.6. Crashes seem to happen mostly after I pause a video and then restart it. First symptom is loss of audio. When I try to quit and restart, I get a spinning beachball.

For getting one, please download the latest nightly build from here: https://artifacts.videolan.org/vlc-3.0/nightly-macos/
Then try to reproduce the problem with that VLC version. If VLC crashes, you should get a standard macOS dialog showing the crash log. Just copy paste the whole content here.

Tried this. Didn't get the "standard macOS dialog." I'm guessing that they don't care about my system (10.13.6) anymore.

I've had enough. I'm going back to VLC 3.0.9. I've got to be able to pause when real life intrudes.

Let me know when 3.0.10 is fixed.

I had the same problem as drm0223 described.

I tested the build VLC_3.0.10-51-g0752c9dec9 as suggested, and I did not see a reoccurrence of the problems yet.

Spoke too soon. Just got the problem happening. I had the video on pause for quite a longer while than I tested before, and the mac went to sleep for a bit.
When starting back, the video started without the sound, and VLC became irresponsive.
Had to force-quit it.

Hi, where did you report it and got no reaction? Please note that the forum is the wrong place to report critical issue, this should be done on the bug tracker at trac.videolan.org.
The purpose of the forum is primarily user to user support, so helping each other, and not the preferred means to inform the developers about issues, that's what we have the issue
tracker for.

Please try to reproduce the issue with a 3.x nightly or the version I linked above and obtain a crashlog either from the dialog that macOS will pop up or by looking for it in the Console.app after VLC crashed.
(Note this only works for the nightlies and the release linked above, others will automatically collect repots and aks you to send it when it crashes but with those we have no way to associate it with individual user
reports currently)

Without a crashlog its impossible to know what happened and as we can not reproduce the issue on our machines, we have no way to debug and figure out what the problem is, unfortunately.

I am also experiencing random freezes. This happens usually when I try to skip back (~5-10 sec).
Alas, no crash log reports are generated by the OS (I am using Catalina 10.15.5). Also, I couldn't find any way to access the Log Files through 'Preferences'.

It was, however, convenient that I came across this post [url=https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=145917] VLC Log File Location [/url] detailing how to access the Log Files. But it apparently requires that the commands be executed while the problem is in progress.

Wish the logs would be saved under such circumstances and that such log-history be accessible by users via 'Preferences' and/or that such instances be automatically sent to 'VLC' team. Many, like myself, are not too tech-savy.

Will try to recreate the event and follow through the suggestion I managed to dig up and let you guys know.

Please not that normal VLC logs are usually not that helpful for a crash, a crashlog (aka stack trace) is needed. But a VLC log might at least give some hint in what area the problem occurred so if you can get one, please provide it.

VLC does not write a logfile so an option to open a log folder would not really help as no such folder exists. But you can configure logging to a file in the advanced preferences to whatever location you want.

Any idea how to dig up this 'crashlog'? Just to reiterate, the OS isn't generating a crash report as I usually do experience whenever an application crashes. Will it get deleted after some time or will it just keep stacking? This is in case I need to react immediately or I can wait for a while to fetch it.

Btw, I did setup the log recording as you suggested @ePirat. So hopefully I am able to fish something useful.

When opening Console.app there is a Crash report section which should show all crash logs of applications that crashed or were force quitted. They do get saved there for a while at least, not sure how long exactly.
