Streaming to Chromecast: subtitles

I have read that it seems to be possible to stream .srt subtitles with a movie to a ChromeCast. But whatever I try, it seems not to be working for me.
Can somebody tell me if this is correct/possible or that I may have misinterpret the news?

It is not supported to stream any kind of subtitles to Chromecast with current versions of VLC. We are working on that for future releases.
