Full screen controls appearing on the wrong screen

Just wondering if anyone knows of a way to solve this problem. I'm using OSX High Sierra on a Macbook with an external monitor attached and I'm running VLC 3.0.0. Have also tried the latest version but had the same problem. Whenever I make the video full screen on the external monitor the control panel overlay shows up on the laptop screen instead of following the video to the external monitor. Is there any way to reposition it permanently?
