Downloading VLC

Hello, I'd like to copy a few of my DVDs and I've seen a few YouTube tutorials using VLC. However, when they open VLC they start with a black screen with the orange cone logo in the middle and a series of options at the top left starting with Media. I've downloaded VLC 3.0.8 but I don't get that black screen or the options at the top when I open the program. I have just transitioned to a MacBook and I still don't know my way around this computer just yet and clearly I'm doing something wrong. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Have you tried using Handbrake?
