I think it could use cast SDK for volume control at least. Except if it's about the license or code portability.

Sorry, but it is BOTH about license and code portability. The SDK is closed source (so that's a NONO for VLC) and available to mobile platforms only, while we want to support all desktop operating systems.

You have the option of simply casting the entire desktop where you can put VLC on full screen. It also works on mobiles.

Hey guys I'm here because the same! lol
In the meantime you can use other apps like Plex and plex media server, they support a lot of formats and subtitles too and works on chromecast

I was also very frustrated with that situation of not being able to render the subtitles at my Chromecast using VLC. The workaround to it was to install the Video Stream for Google Chromecast. It is a Chrome extension that you may find at the Chrom Apps tab (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/deta ... gl/related)

Enjoy it. Cheers!

Hi!
I also would love to have subtitles while casting on Chromecast (in Ubuntu).
Still, seeing the effort that is being made and not to mention the replies on this forum (great customer support... or at least customer confort - which is not a small thing), I just wanted to say "thank you" for this great program.
Keep it going!
Tom

Don't forget it's not really a customer support but more a community and consumer support. ;)

What is the current status of adding Subtitle support to VLC?
To which version has this functionality pushed?

Is there something the community can do to help?
And is there a progress page?

Thanks.

For Android phone users, I tried screen-mirroring feature, then used my VLC player and subtitles showed up. I didn’t cast VLV directly, as it doesn’t cast the subtitles. Not sure if it will work on computers, but I’m sure it doesn’t work on my iPhone.

Any progress on this?

Also, in case any developers reads this, is there _any_ container / subtitle format that is currently supported by Android VLC? I read in official Chromecast specs that WebVTT as well as TTML is supported, with the little footnote "Your subtitle resources must implement CORS" which I honestly don't understand completely. Anyways, I tried muxing an output.mp4 with MPEG-4 AVC for video, AAC for audio, and for WebVTT subtitle (tried both ffmpeg and mp4box for muxing), but VLC won't show subs when casting my output. Also tried muxing output.mkv using ffmpeg, same video/audio and a WebVTT stream for subs, to no avail. When trying to cast in Android VLC, the A/V itself plays fine, but the subtitles are no where to be seen.

So, therefor I just thought I'd ask, am I missing out on some muxing solution that is working TODAY, or is hardcoding or casting the entire phone/tablet screen to television the only option today?

If that is the case, I really look forward on seeing VLC 3.1! ;)

@gew: android VLC support almost all subtitle format / container format used nowadays. The main left issues are that Chromecast support only a few of these, and ask for the complete subtitle file to be sent from the beginning of the cast. The current branch containing chromecast subtitles work is already using CORS and try different methods to achieve that.

The issue is not muxing. The subtitles must be served on another connexion. But we might have good solutions for this. ;)

Does this mean that chromecast subtitles are available in the latest nightlies.videolan.org ?
Thank you!

Hello Unidan/devolper,
Can you please give an idea how long it approximately will take that you have developed a new release with no subtitle problems anymore?
Thanks!!

This will happen this year, but we don't have a release date as of yet. We will update this thread as soon as the update is out.

Any status on the update?

Love VLC, but can't use it without subtitles to chromecast.

Best regards
