VLC 3.04 to play 4k HEVC 80Mb/s video

I'm having problem playing 4k videos on VLC. The audio works perfectly, but the video is lagged, and there is grey screen.

Is there a way that I can play the video without issues? Any change of settings in preferences will help? I want to enable my laptop's full capacity to play this video.
OR maybe this video is just TOO MUCH for my spec?

Which Mac do you use? Note that hardware accelerated decoding is available only on the late 2015 27-inch 5K iMac, the 2017 21-inch iMac, iMac Pro as well as MacBooks and MacBook Pros from 2016 and 2017 (and newer).

I have a 2011 macbook air and am not upgrading my osx
I have 10.12.6 and if I upgrade I fear I have to use vlc 3 and lose software acceleration
I am on vlc 2.2.8 the last working player

VLC 3 is faster on any configuration than 2.2.x, so you don't loose anything if you update.

it skips and freezes playing any hevc (non 4k) I had posts about this a long time ago after vlc v3 came out. have you updated it since? I have not stayed up to date on the vlc updates
