VLC on MAC doesn't detect my DLNA server

Postby JasperDK » 29 Sep 2018 16:48

Hi,

I have VLC 3.0.4 installed on my MAC (MacOS 10.12.6) and VLC doesn't detect my DLNA server from my Synology NAC which I have installed on my network. I have VLC installed on my iPhone, iPad and AppleTV, and VLC works fine on these devices and sees the DLNA server fine (and plays the content).

Any advice appreciated to get VLC working with DLNA on my MAC is appreciated

thanks
Jasper

Can you please give details about the UPnP server running on your NAS? Which software is it in which version?

I'm using the following versions on my Synology:

- Synology DSM 6.1.6-15266

DLNA servers:
- DVBLink server 6.0.0
- build-in Media Server from Synology, version 1.7.9-2858

All are visible on VLC on iPhone, iPad and AppleTV

Alright, we have an idea what could be causing it. We will investigate further!

Not yet. We know where to look for the bug, but we did not fix it yet.

I also have the same problem. When I click on UPnP it never displays anything. Right clicking and trying to enable has no effect either. I saw that it might be related to touchbar on MacBook Pros but I don't have a touchbar. My setup is as follows:

minidlna 1.1.6 (hosted on debian linux 4.9.65; I have no problems seeing this server on iOS VLC or my yamaha network audio deck)
Mac mini 2018 (Intel core i7 3.2GHz; 8 GB 2667 MHz DDR4; Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB)
MacOS 10.14.2
VLC 3.0.6

Any info on this would be great; I tried twice to sign up for a trac VLC login to put it on the bug thread but it never seems to send a confirmation e-mail out to activate an account.

Thanks
Ollie

This fixed it for me. The latest build did not. iMac Mid 2010.
Changed 6 months ago by vladget
I don't know why, but I changed IPv6 settings from "Off" to "Link-local only" and successfully enabled UPnP... (System Preferences->Network->Advanced-TCP/IP tab->IPv6)

Unfortunately, 3.0.7.1 does not resolve the problem for me. Problem is still there

Jasper, this is unfortunate to hear. It is possible that your device services order is not the one you want. Quit VLC. Go to System Preferences -> Network, select a connection on the left and click the wheel-button at the bottom. There, select "Set Service Order..." and make sure that the network interface you use to connect to your DLNA server is at the top. Click OK and start VLC again. Does it work now?

Hi Felix,

I tried changing the device services order to have my used network connection on the top. It makes no difference, it still doesn't work ... (as reference, VLC still works fine on my iPhone and it sees my DLNA server)

3.0.7.1 does not work for me either, however 2.2.8 works fine on the exact same machine.

I'm having the same issue. Here are my details:

MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2018)
2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
16 GB 2400 MHz DDR4
Radeon Pro 560X 4 GB
Intel UHD Graphics 630 1536 MB

VLC 3.0.7.1

As I was writing this up ...after waiting about 10 minutes, my Raspberry Pi running MiniDLNA finally appeared "magically!" I quit VLC and restarted it, and it's back to not appearing. After another 5 - 10 minute wait, it magically reappeared!

Thanks for the great work on VLC, by the way. It's a life-saver in so many situations!

I had the same issue, but changing the service order (as Felix suggested above) and restarting the macbook seems to have done the trick (https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=12&t=138240&p=499492#p499492)

I had the same issue that my RPi MiniDLNA was not showing up in my MacOS VLC UPnP player (It used to). Although the MiniDLNA shows up on all my other mobile devices (iPhone/iPad/etc).

Downgrading VLC version to 2.2.8 seems to have done the trick.

I was not able to test the following as I am using a self hosted VPN and in MacOS VPN connections can not be placed in different orders (only network adapters can be ordered):
