VLC freezes if you skip through videos....

Postby zlloyd1 » 30 Sep 2018 10:20

Hello all, I have VLC Player 3.0.4, and whenever I try to fast forward / rewind a video it stops and freezes for several seconds before playing.... :?:
Can anyone tell me what may be causing this issue, because it is not on all videos, just some of them?? This is incredibly frustrating, and takes away an important feature of the player, as you really cannot skip to a different location in the videos you are watching, unless you want to sit and wait for a LONG stall period before it starts playing again. :(
I always thought that the VLC Player, was the best option out there for a player, but this almost makes me want to search for an alternative that will work correctly. Somebody / anybody, please explain this behavior to me, and if available, provide a solution.
Thanks in advance!!

Please give details about the media you are playing, ideally the output of mediainfo? Further, is your media stored locally or on a NAS on the network?

It is stored locally, in a folder of video files that I keep....
It appears to do this mostly when I play mp4 videos, but it has happened with all video formats from time to time as well. Should I try to convert these to a different format, besides mp4??
I was not aware that the VLC Player had a problem with mp4 videos honestly, but if I need to convert them all to different video formats to stop this, I will.
In any case, thanks for taking the time to respond, and I will check back later if the problem persists!! :)

I have the same issue. I can start an mp4 but try to fast forward, start in a later part of the movie, and VLC 3.0.4 freezes. I'm on a newly installed OS X Mojave on a 2018 MacBook Pro 13". I have a log file if you tell me how to send this to the VLC support team.

I am facing the same issue while rewinding the playback. Once, I didn't quit the frozen app and it resumed playback after few minutes. Guessing that was a temporary thing. Can the VLC team identify the issue & let us know there's any fix. It is pretty annoying.

That might be related to the audio output freeze issue we identified which will be fixed in 3.0.11

I use Version 3.0.11.1 Vetinari (Intel 64bit) (installed on top of the prev one - 1..2 years old VLC) on MacOS Mojave 10.14.6 (18G84), MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015), no additional hardware installed.
CPU 2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

Moving back and forth on video time bar (?) causes it in most cases for freeze (with MavOS rainbow wheel) for 2..15... + sec. Another Mac (Pro 13", Mojave 10.14.5) works like a charm.
