Subtitles not working in VLC 3.0.3 that work under VLC 2.2.8?

I have two Macs; one is a Late 2013 iMac and one is an Early 2016 MacBook that are both running macOS 10.13.5. VLC 2.2.8 works great on both, and can use .SRT subtitles with no issues. However, VLC 3.0.3 (starting with VLC 3.0) will not show .SRT subtitles on both computers. I have tried multiple files, un-installed and re-installed VLC 3.0.3 and VLC 2.2.8 on both computers multiple times, but the same issue persists. Subtitles work under VLC 2.2.8 but not VLC 3.0.3.

What am I missing?

Korean or Arabic subtitles? Try 3.0.4 from nightly builds.

mp3axe, you don't have to mux the subtitle file into the mp4. vlc can read external .srt files. just make sure the filename matches the mp4 filename. e.g. The_Avengers.mp4 and The_Avengers.en.srt.

For anyone reading this, there was another thread another issue I was having, and their suggestion has resolved my problem.
So, there definitely has default behavior change from 2.2.8 to the 3.x versions of VLC.
There is a lack of debug logging which really makes me think VLCs "expected" behavior was definitely a new change from 2.2.8 without much testing.

The source of the problem is that Subler and some other muxers have support for other players to create video files with a chapter thumbnail if it does not support artwork.
Subler 1.4.12 has this feature. Not sure when this was added, but it apparently has been a while because the 2.2.8 never opened 2 windows.
So chapter thumbnails are stored as a JPG video track.
In VLC 2.2.8 this was ignored, but in VLC 3.x it is now primary Video player window.
In addition to the window in 3.x where the JPGs are displayed, the actual mp4 movie is played on a 2nd window.
Subtitles are being played, but on the static JPG video player window, so you will never see them.
I remuxed without the 2nd video track and subtitles are playing now.
IMHO the 2nd window behavior design should be redesigned.

VLC 2.2.8 plays the movie just fine and displays the subtitles just fine. VLC 3+ does not. VLC 3+ opens a second window that doesn't do anything. VLC 3+ is the issue. I tried reporting when VLC 3.0 was first released and my bug report was immediately closed for not being valid or something.

Confirming that the OP is not the only one having this issue. I followed nearly the same process, encode with handbrake, use Subler to add meta data. I would add .srt files to the folder witht he movie (same name). Under the previous VLC it would display the subtitles in the window. Now it won't show the subtitles, additionally, egardless of whether I have "Show video within the main window" enabled, it shows two video windows. One actively has the movie, the other has a random shot from the movie and a progress bar. Closing either window closes the other window too.

I just redownloaded the app through the website (previously I had let it auto-update, and at least initally it seems to be showing subtitles, but I'm still having the double video window issue.

it may have something to do with the subtitle file's character encoding. the english subtitle file is probably encoded in UTF-8, but the default encoding might be set to something else in vlc. (you can identify/change what the encoding is by opening the subtitle file in a text editor like bbedit or ultraedit).

to display UTF-8 encoded subtitles, go to preferences and click Show All. then go to Input/Codecs -> Subtitle codecs -> Subtitles and check the UTF-8 subtitle autodetection checkbox.

I'm not sure that is the issue. The default settings for VLC 2.2.8 have no issues, while the same default settings for VLC 3+ have issues (both versions have "Default (Windows-1252)") as the default. Why would I need to manually change the default settings in VLC 3+, which needed no adjustments in VLC 2.2.8 if the settings are identical?

Also, what text editor do I use to check the encoding if I don't want to pay $49 or $99 for BBedit or UltraEdit?

Just registered to post how I solved it.
I had the same issue and did a reinstall. There is an option on the bottom on the list of every part to install that says something like clear settings and cache.
I ticked this and then my issue was resolved.
