is it possible to use system volume control with the Apple Remote instead of VLC's own volume control?

Short answer: no, it's not.

Long answer: No, and we won't implement this as it is quite complicated and conflicts with the AppleRemote behavior in apps by Apple (iTunes, iPhoto, FrontRow, ...), which don't change the system volume either.

You might want to see if there are third parties that allow you to over-ride the behaviour of the Apple Remote, independent of VLC. As a starting point, you might want to look at the Wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_Remote . I haven't used any of this software, so I can't comment on how effective they are.

On my Mac, using the Apple Remote while focused in iTunes or Front Row changes the system volume, not the application volume.

u can customize it to work with the apple remote to control vlc playback as well as system volume plus a lot more. very handy.

I'd like to let you know that this feature was finally (!) implemented for the next major release due later this year. We might even backport it to the stable series, but this isn't decided yet.

My Apple remote worked fine for volume in VLC on both my Macs, until I upgraded one of them to High Sierra, now it doesn't work on that one at all, but it still works on the one running Sierra 10.12.6 just fine.

Hi Felix,

I've experienced another issue since the High Sierra update. No matter what I set in the VLC settings for third party applications (eg. for iTunes) what should they
do during a video playback and using the apple remote control - iTunes pops-up. Even if I set not to launch any third pary application in the settings. That
wasn't a problem before.

Will be that fixed too?
