High Sierra & HEVC

Postby Andrew2010 » 05 Sep 2017 14:53

Hi,

does any VLC version support HEVC acceleration that has been introduced to High Sierra?

For those who are curious...

The only way to play back x265 and HEVC files properly is High Sierra + IINA Player. It stutters at the beginning of each video and randomly within (will be fixed by Apple over time I guess), but like 98% is smooth and there are no artifacts, grey screens or other annoying things.

A little bit of research of why VLC isnt able to play back modern files brought up, that this might be due to the fact, that VLC is still using the VDA framework, which is old and abandoned by Apple for years now and will never be able to decode modern codecs properly.

Which brings me to the question: Why is VLC still using this ancient framework?

Excellent question. I, too, have had much better luck after switching to IINA.
