How to make VLC open a video in correct dimensions and not "Blow it up"?

Postby coffee_king » 02 Feb 2017 17:35

Every time I open a video using VLC on my 27" 5k retina iMac it always opens the video a lot larger on the screen than it actually is.
So say with a 1080p it blows it up to about double that size, so the pixels are twice as large and the video isnt as sharp.
How can I make VLC open a video file in EXACTLY the size/dimensions it is without it blowing it up as I want to be able to view it in its native dimensions?

Thanks in advance

VLC's behaviour seems to be to act in the same way the rest of video players do, using the logical resolution of the screen (which is ordinarily lower than the physical one — half on each dimension by default for Retina displays, I believe — which is why the videos appear larger that you would like). I don't think that there is currently a way to change this behaviour. If you have come across another video player that does what you would like it might help you make a case; however, given past forum entries,[1, 2] pointing out image or video editing software that displays using the physical resolution will likely not come across as a convincing argument (unless I have misunderstood the situation).

I cant tell you an app that does display in (What shall we call it "Native Resolution"?) but I wish VLC did (As do these others whose asked)

It does indeed seem that native resolution is the term to use when talking about the LCD's physical properties, and that what you are looking for is a 1:1 pixel mapping. There are third party utilities that allow setting the logical resolution of a Mac's screen to the native one of the display, which is the only approximation to what you want that I can think of — at the cost of changing the user experience of the whole system.
