SRT subtitle on an MP4 video is very very small

Any ideas on how to fix this? I've changed it to large and larger but the font size is not changing.

I've tried versions 2.2.1 up to the latest which is 2.2.5.x. I've also just tried 2.2.7 with the same results.

edit: the SRT subtitle is embedded into the MP4

Seems the problem lies with the stable version of VLC. I tried VLC 3 nightly and it works fine.
