Subtitles settings suddenly refuse to work.

Postby Dan_Titan » 20 Dec 2016 22:37

Hi,

I'm on Mac (10.11.6, El Capitan) using VLC for watching movies.
Since I need subtitling, it's been a treat to add background for it. Else, it's sometimes hard or downright impossible to read the text.
Haven't had any problem with this for years until recently.
All of a sudden, the subtitle background option fails to work. Even setting font size, font color, etc. fails.
Have tried deleting all VLC files, including prefs and what not, and installing VLC again to no avail.
Also installed previous VLC version as it worked fine before, but still no go.
Have tried every possible setting without success and am at road's end by now.
How on earth can I get the subtitle background back, and how adjust the subtitles as I wish?

Regards,
Dan

This exact same thing has happened to me. Pretty much tried everything you have to sort it too.

Now tried a new clean install of VLC version 2.2.4 Weatherwax (Intel 64bit).
Still no way to set subtitles. It's using some kind of default setting.
Have tried Preferences -> Subtitles/OSD -> Show all -> Video -> Subtitles/OSD -> Text renderer and tried every possible option. But nothing sticks after saving.
Even delete folders in users/preferences called "VeetleVLC" if it had somethng to do with it.
Plus, all files show in attached screen shot. Still no go.

I've found that by randomly changing subtitles settings in the advanced and standard settings panels, I sometimes get a change after a restart. Especially the "Text renderer for Mac" under Video / Subtitles in the advanced settings seems to have an effect. But it is too random and I haven't investigated it enough too find a pattern. My hunch is that some of the different subtitles menus somehow conflict and cancel each other out.
